    The case of online trust

Copyright SpringerThis paper contributes to the debate on online trust addressing the problem of whether an online environment satisfies the necessary conditions for the emergence of trust. The paper defends the thesis that online environments can foster trust, and it does so in three steps. Firstly, the arguments proposed by the detractors of online trust are presented and analysed. Secondly, it is argued that trust can emerge in uncertain and risky environments and that it is possible to trust online identities when they are diachronic and sufficient data are available to assess their reputation. Finally, a definition of trust as a second-order property of first-order relation is endorsed in order to present a new definition of online trust. According to such a definition, online trust is an occurrence of trust that specifically qualifies the relation of communication ongoing among individuals in digital environments. On the basis of this analysis, the paper concludes by arguing that online trust promotes the emergence of social behaviours rewarding honest and transparent communications.Peer reviewe

    Experimental investigation of fuel-cooled combustor: Cooling efficiency and coke formation

    Scramjet is an air-breathing engine designed to propel advanced aircrafts in the atmosphere, suitable, according to various studies, to thrust high-speed hypersonic flights (over Mach 5). The thermal protection of vehicles flying at hypersonic velocities is a critical problem; as at supersonic speeds the incoming air is at too high temperature to be used as a coolant, the fuel becomes the only adequate source of cooling for the vehicle. Regenerative cooling is a well-known cooling technique using the fuel as coolant. As the development of regeneratively cooled engines faces many difficulties, an empirical study of this cooling technology and of its complex dynamics is of high interest. In this context, a remotely controlled fuel-cooled combustor, suitable for the experimental analysis of the pyrolysis-combustion coupling characterizing a fuel-cooled combustion chamber when a hydrocarbon propellant is used, has been designed. Tests are realized under both stationary and transient conditions using ethylene as fuel and air as oxidizer. Two operating parameters, i.e. fuel mass flow rate (between 0.010 and 0.040 g.s-1) and equivalence ratio (between 1.0 and 1.5), have been investigated. It has been observed that fuel mass flow rate increases always result in the raise of the heat flux density passing from the combustion gases to the combustor walls. It has been seen that mass flow rate raises between 16 and 20 % lead to increases in the thermal energy evacuated by the fuel-coolant in the range from 30.4 to 48.5 %, depending on equivalence ratio and pressure. The dependence of the cooling system heat exchange efficiency on the two operating parameters has been demonstrated. The consequences of the coking activity of the fuel have also been investigated.     This study aimed at answering questions concerning the significant effect of the proposed system design on the academic management of KIU in terms of supportability, reliability, maintainability and availability. Using a quasi-experimental design on a total sample of 750 respondents (i.e. the Users, Academic Staff and Students) and t-sample test, the study revealed that there was a significant effect by the proposed design on the academic management system. The study thus recommends that all stakeholders should be trained to interact and use it which will save a lot of time for the students, academic staff and university branches in processing academic data.     The digital services act: an analysis of its ethical, legal, and social implications

    In December 2020, the European Commission issued the Digital Services Act (DSA), a legislative proposal for a single market of digital services, focusing on fundamental rights, data privacy, and the protection of stakeholders. The DSA seeks to promote European digital sovereignty, among other goals. This article reviews the literature and related documents on the DSA to map and evaluate its ethical, legal, and social implications. It examines four macro-areas of interest regarding the digital services offered by online platforms. The analysis concludes that, so far, the DSA has led to contrasting interpretations, ranging from stakeholders expecting it to be more challenging for gatekeepers, to others objecting that the proposed obligations are unjustified. The article contributes to this debate by arguing that a more robust framework for the benefit of all stakeholders should be defined

    Rehabilitation After International Space Station Flights

    Rehabilitating U.S. crew members to preflight status following flights on the Russian Mir Space Station required longer than six months for full functional recovery of some of the seven crew members. Additional exercise hardware has been added on the International Space Station as well as a rehabilitative emphasis on functional fitness/agility and proprioception. The authors will describe and present the results of the rehabilitation program for ISS and evaluate rehabilitative needs for longer missions. Pre- and in-flight programs emphasize strength and aerobic conditioning. One year before launch, crew members are assigned an Astronaut Strength and Conditioning specialist. Crew members are scheduled for 2 hours, 3 days a week, for pre-flight training and 2.5 hours, six days a week, for in-flight training. Crewmembers are tested on functional fitness, agility, isokinetic strength, and submaximal cycle ergometer evaluation before and after flight. The information from these tests is used for exercise prescriptions, comparison, and evaluation of the astronaut and training programs. The rehabilitation program lasts for 45 days and is scheduled for 2 hours during each crew workday. Phase 1 of the rehabilitation program starts on landing day and places emphasis on ambulation, flexibility, and muscle strengthening. Phase 2 adds proprioceptive exercise and cardiovascular conditioning. Phase 3 (the longest phase) focuses on functional development. All programs are tailored specifically for each individual according to their test results, preferred recreational activities, and mission roles and duties. Most crew members reached or exceeded their preflight test values 45 days after flight. Some crew members subjectively indicated the need for a longer rehabilitation period. The current rehabilitation program for returning ISS crew members seems adequate in content but may need to be extended for longer expeditions

    Grounding an ontology upon geographical data has been pro- posed as a method of handling the vagueness in the domain more effectively. In order to do this, we require methods of reasoning about the spatial relations between the regions within the data. This stage can be computationally expensive, as we require information on the location of points in relation to each other.
